1869 MEXICO Silver "ONE HALF REAL" Last DATE & ½ Real COIN of the ZACATECAS MINT
Description
This is an original, silver,
"One Half Real"
from the
"Republic of Mexico"
. Dated 1869, it is the last date and the last
“½ Real”,
ever struck at the Zacatecas mint.
Juan de Tolosa was a Basque Conquistador, who on September 8, 1546, discovered what turned out to be the richest silver mines in Mexico at Zacatecas. Today the Zacatecano Museum is on Doctor Hierro Street. Between 1802 and 1905 this building used to be the Casa de Moneda, where this coin was struck. Hierro is the mint assayer’s name on this coin, but I don’t know if there is any connection to the street name.
Weight: 1.64 Gram, 16 Millimeter, .903 Silver.

Obverse:
REPUBLICA MEXICANA • Eagle, holding snake in beak, standing on a cactus. This, the national symbol of Mexico, stands for the Aztec legend that foretold they were to make a great empire in a marshy area where they would see a cactus with an eagle standing on it eating a snake. The site where this actually happened is now Mexico City.
